Our Biometrics Range | How do we determine if a face is real or fake?

30/11/2022

A guide from Innovative Technology detailing our unique approach to fraud detection across our biometrics range.

Understanding fraud attempts

With the increasing use of biometric technology in many sectors to validate information or identity people, the need to detect any fraud attempts or ‘spoofs’

intended to fool the system is vital. Presentation Attack Detection (PAD), is the comprehensive approach to spoof-detection which includes anti-spoofing/liveness detection technologies. PAD is designed to identify a valid face and reject any invalid faces such as a photo, video, 3D models, or any substitute for a live person’s face.

Facial Liveness Detection

There are two main types:

Our approach to anti-spoof detection

Our range of biometric products, for age estimation and access control, uses single-image passive liveness detection. We have built, trained and tuned our own neural networks using an extensive data sample containing millions of images, to create an in-house, bespoke Presentation Attack Detection technique.

Using multiple parameters to analyse the full scene, we can determine a genuine subject. The same frame used for facial matching is also used for liveness checking, resulting in minimal processing. By not having a separate dedicated method for spoof, fraudsters have no information on how to fool the system, making it more secure. We have included anti-spoof technology as standard across the biometrics range. Many organisations use a third party to supply their spoof detection technology, for an additional fee, but our products have this included at no extra cost.

With only a single USB camera and no special illumination, our solutions give accurate and reliable results in real-time. It is understandable for organisations, especially SMEs, to worry about investing in biometric solutions with the technology still in its infancy. However, if secure systems are in place, they can bring many benefits to businesses in various vertical sectors.
